When it comes to lakes, the first thing that usually comes to mind is tranquility. Then of course there are hiking, swimming, boating, fishing and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Here is my list of some of the best lake destinations where you can relax and create lasting memories.
SOUTH CAROLINA: LAKE MURRAY
Lake Murray is an excellent place for a family summer vacation. This manufactured lake offers paddleboarding, kayaking, boating, sailing, and endless water activities.
If you’re looking for relaxation, enjoy the quiet side of Dreher Island State Park. Here you can relax on the sandy beach, swim, kayak and paddleboard (available for rental). Campgrounds are available if you enjoy camping, or you can rent waterfront villas.
WISCONSIN: GHOST LAKE INN
The state of the cheese: Wisconsin is known for more than just its cheese. This state offers over 15,000 lakes and lakeside escape options. Ghost Lake Lodge is one of the most beautiful vacation spots in Wisconsin.
This peaceful lake is one of the oldest historic towns in the area.
MISSISSIPPI: TOMBIGBEE STATE PARK, TUPELO

NEBRASKA: LAKE MCCONAUGHY
Lake Mac, what Nebraskas know, boasts the largest lake in the state at 142 feet deep. With over 20 miles of sandy beach, it’s a favorite for those who want to relax on the shore or play in the water.
A mecca for water sports enthusiasts, travelers from all over the Midwest come here to enjoy fishing or boating on the lake.
There are hiking and biking trails and several lodging options around the lake.
CALIFORNIA: LAKE TAHOE
One of the most popular lakes in the United States, straddling two states, California and Nevada, and is a favorite vacation spot. While there’s no wrong view anywhere on this lake, the north side offers some of the best places to stay.
Most resorts have golf courses and offer outdoor activities such as kayaking, swimming, and canoeing. You can also enjoy the sandy lakeside shores of Sand Harbor State Park.
